Concordia International School Shanghai (CISS)

Opened in 1998, with the support of the Hong Kong International School, with which it still has close relations. All ages on one campus, they offer a US education and college preparation to over 25 nationalities, with American passport holders in a clear majority. Located in Jinqiao, a favorite residential spot for expats in Shanghai.

 

Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong

Located in the expat suburb of Jinqiao in Pudong and also on a new campus in Puxi, across the river. An international school catering to students from all over the world, with Americans (often American born Chinese) and British forming the largest cohorts. Offers an English education but substitutes the the IB Diploma for A levels. A delightful kindergarten section called ‘Ducks’ housed in a separate building.

 

Shanghai American School (SAS)

Considered modern and forward-thinking and among the best schools in Asia, following the American curriculum. SAT scores and AP results are well above national averages and leavers head to a spectacular range of universities and colleges. Over 40 nationalities - the majority US passport holders but Asian (often US born) students dominate.

 

British International School Shanghai Puxi

BISS Puxi, owned by Nord Anglia Education, offers an international version of the National Curriculum for England. On two campuses in the south-west of the city and non-selective (no English requirement) teaching pupils from 18 months to 18 years. Students study for IGCSEs at 16 and then take the two year International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

 

Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi

It's the second branch of Dulwich schools to open (2016) in Shanghai. Expanding their educational offering upwards and starting their first International Baccalaureate Diploma programme in 2021. Owned and run by Dulwich College Management International as is their sister school, in Shanghai Pudong, founded in 2003.

 

Harrow International School

Fourth Harrow International School, which was opened in 2016 in the northern part of Pudong on a state of the art, brand new campus with the welcome features of an air-filtration system and roof-top gardens. Licensed by Harrow School to an independent owner but incorporating the ethos of its UK parent. Pupils of 26 nationalities taught in English throughout.

 

Nord Anglia International School Shanghai Pudong (formerly BISS Pudong)

Formerly called British International School of Shanghai Pudong, now owned (as is BISS Puxi) by the rapidly growing Nord Anglia Education group of international schools, who run a stable of schools in China. Follows the same academic programme as its counterparts in the UK, making a school switch simple for returning Brits. As with other Nord Anglia schools, there is an arts programme designed with the Julliard school in New York and a STEM programme, devised with MIT.

 

Shanghai Community International Schools

Located on campuses both sides of the Huangpu river in Shanghai. Two schools in Changning (Hongqiao ECE for nursery and kindergarten, Hongqiao for grades 1-12) and one school in Pudong (nursery – grade 12). Now over 20 years old and an International Baccalaureate World School, accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

 

Shanghai Livingston American School (LAS)

Opened in 2003, to provide an American-style education and on the current campus in the Changning District since 2005. Following the American (Californian public school) curriculum and accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) since 2009. The global school population is offered intensive ESL classes, to enable class participation in double-quick time.

 

Shanghai Singapore International School (SSIS)

Founded in 1996, integrating its campuses in 2019.Teaching over 40 nationalities but with a large cohort (20 per cent in both cases) from Singapore and South Korea. One of the few schools in Shanghai to offer the International Baccalaureate Careers Programme. Accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS).

 

Shanghai United International School Gubei (SUIS)

Founded by one of the largest education organisers in China, the Xiehe Group of over 40 schools and kindergartens in Shanghai and other Chinese cities. Four schools in Shanghai (three in Minhang, one in Pudong) with varying curricula, for example SUIS Pudong follows the National Curriculum of England, leading to IGCSEs and A Levels and SUIS Gubei an adapted East meets West Curriculum followed by the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Parents need to the curriculum offered by each school carefully

 

Western International School of Shanghai (WISS)

Located in Xujing Town, west of the city, half an hour from downtown Shanghai and close to Hongqiao International Airport. An 18 acre modern, purpose-built campus providing an all-through education. A selective International Baccalaureate World School and the first one in China to offer all four IB programmes, including  the IB Careers Related Programme. They also provide a significant exposure to Chinese language and culture.

 

Yew Chung International School Pudong (YCIS Pudong)

Part of the Yew Chung network with schools in China and the Silicon Valley in California. Five campuses in Puxi and Pudong, in the south-western area of Shanghai, providing a bilingual environment (an international and a Chinese teacher in each class). Also, a strong Chinese language and culture programme. Over 50 different nationalities represented.

Dulwich College Beijing

Opened in 2005 and closely tied to its London parent. On two campuses in Shunyi and Chaoyang, the former all-through and the latter for nursery and kindergarten. The Legend Garden campus lives up to its name with games on grass and, even, Beijing’s only cricket pitch. Regularly one of the top international schools on Beijing lists and recently an award winner for Creativity in Learning.

 

Harrow International School Beijing

Founded in 2005, one of three international Harrow schools. Now with a new city campus for pre-nursery to reception and a main campus in Chaoyang. Offering an all-through English education to students from over 25 nationalities. All students are enrolled in houses along the lines of Harrow School, London and a large number of graduates head off to university either in the UK or USA.

 

International School of Beijing (ISB)

Established by five English speaking embassies, nearly forty years ago. Accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Regularly tipped up as one of the best international schools in Beijing. Since 2002, located on a huge campus in Shunyi, opened in 2013 and completed with shiny new sports domes.

 

Yew Chung International School of Beijing

Opened over 20 years ago in the Chiaoyang District of Beijing. One of the network of schools owned by the Yew Chung foundation (also in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Silicon Valley, California). Council of International Schools (CIS) accredited and an International Baccalaureate World School offering a bilingual education from the cradle to graduation.

Beanstalk International Bilingual School (BIBS)

As the name implies, a bilingual (Chinese/English) school for mainly (around 70 per cent) Chinese families, although there are also students from approximately 35 other nationalities. Opened in 1998 and accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

 

Beijing Aidi School

A bilingual (English/Chinese) school, offering international students a range of curricula options, including Chinese, English, Australian and American, culminating in the choice of either English A Levels or an American High School Diploma and Advanced Placement courses.

 

Beijing City International School

Founded in 2005, with a majority of Chinese students, although many hold American passports. Dually accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

 

Beijing Huijia Private School

A bilingual (Chinese/English) school, opened in 1993 that has accepted non-Mainland Chinese since 2010. The students are mainly Chinese, although there are also Australian and American cohorts. The group also runs 42 kindergartens looking after 6,000 children and a vocational college which caters for 5,000 students. Large numbers of mainly Chinese move on to university in the USA.

 

Beijing World Youth Academy

Founded in 2001 and licensed to accept non-Mainland Chinese students with around 20 other nationalities enrolled, although Chinese students are by far the largest cohort. Now based on four purpose-built new campuses in Chaoyang, complete with air purifiers. Teaching is in English and they offer an EAL programme. A member of ACAMIS (Association of Chinese and Mongolian International Schools).

 

British School of Beijing Sanlitun (BSB)

Brand new addition to the Nord Anglia stable in shiny new buildings in downtown Beijing and sister school to the long-established British School, also now owned by Nord Anglia. All classes taught in English but Mandarin available as a language, as well as a strong music and performing arts section in collaboration with Juilliard, New York.

 

British School of Beijing Shunyi (BSB)

In the popular expat suburb of Shunyi, 30 kms from frenzied downtown Beijing. Now owned by Nord Anglia and providing classes taught in English, German and Korean. Teaching STEAM programmes in collaboration with Juilliard, New York and MIT and offering the Duke of Edinburgh International Award.

 

Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB)

Opened in 2005 and teaching a combination of the New Brunswick curriculum and the International Baccalaureate Programme with Montessori elements incorporated in the lower school. Around 40 per cent of the students are either Canadian or American. They offer the alternative of the New Brunswick or the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

 

International French School Beijing

Formerly called the Lycée Francais de Pékin, which was opened in 1965 as an AEFE (Agency for French Education Abroad), school. Offering a full French education with the DNB (Diplome National du Brevet) at sixteen and the French Baccalaureate.​

International School of Nanshan Shenzhen

Founded in 2002 through the foresight and partnership among the Government of Canada, the Province of New Brunswick, and Dr. Francis Pang, the International School of Nanshan Shenzhen offers its students an internationally recognized Canadian curriculum taught in the IB framework. The goal is to foster a diverse student body through exceptional education, instilling in young people a love and joy of learning, an ability to think independently, and the confidence to take risks in pursuing their dreams and goals. Located in the Qianhai Co-operation Zone, Harrow International School, Shenzhen Qianhai (HIS Shenzhen) covers an area of 14,700 sqm, providing world class international curriculum. Shenzhen American International School

Shenzhen American International School (SAIS) is an AdvancED accredited school which was established upon the approval of both the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and the Department of Education of Guangdong Province in May, 2005. SAIS provides quality education services to foreign nationals as well as students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. SAIS is located on the west side of SiHai Park, adjacent to the Shekou Youth Center and across from the Shekou Sports Center. The park is a 13.5 hectares learning lab for the study of flora, fauna, climate, air and water quality, as well as micro environments. SAIS student have access to both the Shekou Youth Center facilities and the athletic areas at Shekou Sports Center.

 

Shenzhen International Foundation College

Shenzhen International Foundation College (SIFC), licensed by the Shenzhen Education Bureau, was founded in June, 2004. It is the first international school in Shenzhen engaged in international pre-university courses and American high school curriculum. With the school motto “To combine Chinese and Western words into actions” SIFC has captured the essence of Eastern and Western cultures to create a unique bilingual and multicultural teaching mode as well as an international school-based curriculum based on long-term exploration.

 

Nord Anglia School Shenzhen

Nord Anglia School Shenzhen provides state of the art teaching and learning environments for up to 1200 students. The unique international learning experience at NAS Shenzhen offers students aged 6 - 16 years old the best of eastern and western education resources and philosophies. Australian International School (AISHK) 

Adapted Australian curriculum/ New South Wales HSC/ IB Diploma; ages 4-18; private non-profit; 1,100 students. An all-through school located in Kowloon Tong in Kowloon West, offering an Australian education and the alternative qualification of the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The students come from around 25 different nationalities but with the majority holding Australian passports. Amazing roof top aquatic centre. Sport and non-sporting activities are available outside the school curriculum.

 

Canadian International School 

PYP/ MYP/ IB Diploma/ Ontario HSD; ages 4-18; private non-profit; 1,580 students. Founded in 1991 and still teaching a majority of Canadian students, although there are also passport holders from over 40 other countries. Dually accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

 

Chinese International School

Adapted curriculum/ MYP/ IB Diploma; ages 4-18; private non-profit; 1,420 students. The school is a charity, with governance run by a Board of Governors. Based in a modern high tech building at the top of Braemar Hill. 25 per cent each, British and American students, the remainder ‘global Chinese’ of which, over 60 per cent are Hong Kong born. Known for Mandarin and the high standard of academics. Wide sporting provision including golf and sailing.

 

ESF Kennedy School

PYP; ages 5-11; private non-profit; 900 students. One of the ESF primary schools for English-speaking children, located in western Hong Kong. Music and performing arts are major elements of the education offered here and the school is more sporty than some of the other ESF primaries.

 

ESF West Island School 

Adapted National Curriculum for England/ IGCSE/ IB Diploma/ IB Careers/ BTEC; ages 11-18; private non-profit; 1,250 students. An English Schools Foundation (ESF) secondary school offering a mixed curriculum but is a candidate for authorisation to teach the IBMYP and at present the only school in the network to offer BTECs.

 

French International School (FIS) 

French curriculum/ National Curriculum for England/ IGCSE/ IB Diploma/ OIB; ages 3-18; privately owned; 2,600 students. Now on four campuses, including the brand-new state of the art eco-campus at Tseung Kwan O. Pupils from over 40 different nationalities split into French (bilingual) and International streams. First international authorized International Baccalaureate World School in Hong Kong. The school provides additional teaching in English for certain subjects, through the American section, which leads to the international (French/English) Option International Baccalaureate.

 

German Swiss International School (GSIS)

German curriculum/ International Abitur/ IGCSE; A Level; ages 5-18; private non-profit; 1,240 students. Established in 1969 by German and Swiss families looking for a bilingual German/English education. To this end they offer the alternative of the German International Abitur (DIAP) or the English alternative of IGCSEs and A Levels. Located on The Peak.

 

Harrow International School

National Curriculum for England/ GCSE/ A Level; ages 2-18; private non-profit; 1,300 students. Only British school in Hong Kong to offer boarding. Opened in 2012 and located in the Western New Territories. The school’s license stipulates that 50 per cent of the student body should be non-local, however the second passport held by most Hong Kong Chinese, high net-worth families circumnavigates this rule. Huge demand for places.

 

Hong Kong Academy (HKA) 

PYP/ MYP/ IB Diploma; ages 3-18; private non-profit; 600 students. Founded in 2012 and offering all three of the original International Baccalaureate Programmes. Brand new, eco-friendly award winning campus in Sai Kung in the New Territories surrounded by performance and athletic spaces, which are shared with the local community. The school is now fairly close to its capacity of 660 students.

 

Hong Kong International School (HKIS) 

American curriculum/ American High School Diploma/ AP; ages 4-18; private non-profit; 2,600 students. Large American-style, lower primary, upper primary, middle and high school, over 50 years old and probably the largest international school in Hong Kong, assisted by the US State Department. The school teaches over 2,500 pupils from around 40 different nationalities. Located at two campuses on the south side of Hong Kong island – middle and high schools in excellent facilities in Tai Tam and primary schools in Repulse Bay. Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

 

Kellett Senior School

National Curriculum for England/ I/GCSE/ A Level; ages 11-18; private non-profit; 570 students. Now on a cool, industrial-style modern campus in Kowloon, the school was started by a group of parents over 40 years ago. Still governed by 12 elected parent members. Retains A Levels (rather than the IB Diploma) and results are above the UK average. Arts considered a strength and a strong music department leads on to both GCSE and A Level. Wide variety of sport and extra-curricular activities put on after school.

 

Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong 

IB diploma; ages 16-19; independent private non-profit; 256 students. Part of the United World College (UWC) network of schools and educational programmes. Li Po Chun UWC is a senior years only (16-19-years-old) school in the New Territories for motivated and curious teenagers seeking to become change-makers.

 

Malvern College Hong Kong 

Adapted PYP/ MYP/ IB Diploma; ages 4-18; privately owned; 960 students. A branch of the English public school, Malvern College that is a new entrant (2018) to the big brand-name English schools here. Authorised to teach the International Baccalaureate PYP and MYP programmes but, as yet, still a candidate for teaching the IB Diploma.

 

Nord Anglia International School Hong Kong

Adapted National Curriculum for England/ IGCSE/ IB Diploma; ages 3-18; privately owned; 1,200 students. A private pre-school, elementary and secondary school, opened in 2014 and now on two campuses (Sai Kung and Tai Tam). Part of the Nord Anglia Education group’s empire. Families come from around 40 different nationalities and 80 per cent of the enrolled students are expats. Inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) for British Schools Overseas (BSO).

 

Shrewsbury International School Hong Kong

Adapted National Curriculum for England; ages 3-11; private non-profit; 1,000 students. Brand new nursery and primary school opened in 2018. Located on an impressive, purpose-built campus in Tseung Kwan O. The expectation is that pupils will mainly come from an international background but we will report further once it has bedded in.

 

Stamford American School

Adapted American/ candidate PYP/ candidate MYP/ American High School Diploma/ AP/ candidate IB Diploma; ages 5-18; privately owned; 350 students. A newly-opened (2016) school, owned and run by the global education company, Cognita. In addition to its American programme, the school is a candidate to teach the IBPYP and IBMYP and IB Diploma.

 

American International School

American curriculum/ American High School Diploma/ AP; ages 3-18; private non-profit; 850 students. Founded by Dr. Thomas Liang in 1986, to give local students the right preparation, so that they could apply to US universities. Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

 

American School Hong Kong (ASHK)

Adapted American curriculum; ages 5-16; privately owned. Owned and operated by Esol Education, the global network (nine schools on three continents) dedicated to running American international schools. Dually accredited by the Middle States Association (MSA) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

 

Discovery Bay International School

Adapted curriculum/ IGCSE/ A Level; ages 3-18; privately owned; 1,000 students. A British kindergarten, primary and secondary school founded in 1983 in Discovery Bay, Lantau Island. Recently expanded into year 13 with the first A Level results in 2019.  A high percentage of candidates achieve A*-A at IGCSEs. It’s situation has led to it developing better sporting facilities than at some Hong Kong schools. Accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

 

English Schools Foundation (ESF)

A group of 22 preschool, primary and secondary schools for 17,770 pupils from over 70 nationalities. All authorised IB World Schools - five international kindergartens, nine primary schools, five secondary schools and three all-through schools. Zoning apples to the primary and secondary schools according to the current or expected Hong Kong address of the family. No zoning for Renaissance and Discovery Colleges offering the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme or for the all-through Jockey Club Sarah Roe School for SEN students.

 

Renaissance College Hong Kong

PYP/ MYP/ IB Diploma/ IB Careers; ages 5-18; private non-profit; 2,050 students. One of two English Schools Foundation (ESF) all-through schools offering all four programmes of the International Baccalaureate.

 

Sha Tin College

Adapted curriculum/ MYP/ IB Diploma/ IB Careers; ages 12-18; private non-profit; 1,200 students. International secondary school on a campus in Fo Tan since 1985. Member of the English Schools Foundation (ESF). Very impressive International Baccalaureate Diploma results with over 50 per cent regularly scoring in the high thirties against a global average of 30.

 

Sha Tin Junior School

PYP; ages 5-11; private non-profit; 900 students. An English Schools Foundation (ESF) primary school opened in 1988 and sharing facilities with the senior school, Sha Tin College. Authorised to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme since 2009.

 

Singapore International School (Hong Kong)

Adapted/ IGCSE/ IB Diploma; ages 4-18; private non-profit; 1,500 students. Located on two campuses with the majority of students being local or coming from Singapore. Highly impressive average International Baccalaureate Diploma scores, which are consistently in the high thirties against the global figure of 30.

 

Victoria Shanghai Academy

PYP/ MYP/ IB Diploma; ages 5-18; private non-profit; 1,870 students. Opened in 1965 and teaching mainly local students. International Baccalaureate Diploma averages are consistently in the high thirties as opposed to the global average of 30. The school is dually accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

Chengdu International School

Chengdu International School (CDIS) is the oldest international school in Chengdu, having operated for over twenty years. Canadian International School Kunshan (CISK) is located near Duke Kunshan University and Kunshan High School, with convenient transportation.
